Good Independence

There is such a thing as good independence. We experience this through the different stages of growing up. Maybe as a young child it’s the ability to feed ourselves and go to the bathroom. As we get a little older, it could look like riding a bike around the neighborhood with siblings or friends. Then the first car, the first job, the first home. We’ve all seen these things and wanted them for ourselves. The problem comes when we become independent in an unhealthy way. Where healthy independence might show up as ability and freedom, unhealthy independence shows up in spitefully rejecting help. It appears as pride and arrogance in many shapes and forms.
