Have you ever had a dream where you were trying to run but couldn’t quite pick up speed—where the harder you tried, the more it felt like your feet were stuck in quicksand? You longed to get somewhere because you trusted it was the best place to be, but no matter how hard you tried, it was completely out of reach. How about trying to contact someone on the phone? You call and call, and it just goes to voicemail. Maybe you text someone, and it just stays on “read.” No matter what you are doing, you cannot connect with the person you are trying to reach. This is the same way the psalmist is feeling when trying to “speak” with God. He knows the way and where to go, but he just can’t get there, no matter how hard he tries. He prays and prays, but it just feels like God keeps sending his call to voicemail. It’s a painful feeling.
