“Hello darkness my old friend”; these are the opening lyrics to the song “The
Sound of Silence” by Simon and Garfunkel (1965) and the band Disturbed’s
Grammy–award-winning cover in 2017. The song describes the uncomfortable
“sound” of silence during solemn events and experiences the singer has. Silence
can bring an opportunity for reflection that can make us sad, but silence can also
bring about a reflection to help us grow. Without the distractions of everyday life,
silence can help see life clearly.
