Has a child ever wandered from you in the supermarket or a pet gotten loose in the neighborhood? The sinking feeling of worry and grief—that someone or something beloved may be gone for good—is awful to experience. But the relief and joy you feel when you hear your child call from the next aisle or see your pet running toward you again overwhelms that grief. That grief was real, just as the grief of Joseph of Arimathea, of the women who came to Jesus’s tomb, and of all Jesus’s followers who saw his death and wondered if their hope in the coming kingdom had died with him. But just as Jesus’s tomb was only borrowed, so too was their grief soon overwhelmed by the joy of his resurrection.
