In the early 2000s, a new acronym emerged to describe the new levels of anxiety created by social media. FOMO (the “fear of missing out”) had always existed, but it was heightened when new platforms like MySpace and Facebook made teenagers and young adults even more anxious as they witnessed others gathering without them. The fear of missing out was eventually replaced by MOMO (“mystery of missing out”), referring to “the suspicion that you are missing out on events not even documented on social media” and even JOMO (“the joy of missing out”) (Morwenna Ferrier, “After FOMO, Five More Feelings of Angst in the Social Media Age,” The Guardian, January 18, 2016,
https://www.theguardian.com/fashion/shortcuts/2016/jan/18/fomo-five-more-feelings-angst-social-media-acronyms). The message of Jesus in parables like the lost coin is that no one misses out except by choice. All are sought out by God, and all are invited into the celebration.
