Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia is a burial place for fallen soldiers. A twenty-four-hour guard remains in action year-round, no matter what. Depending on the season, every hour or every half hour brings a changing of the guard, which takes place in a very serious and elaborate ceremony to mark the significance of the vigil (see more here, including videos of the ceremony). While the guards shift in and out of their post, the purpose and their work is constantly set on the same outcome, no matter who is on duty. It has been this way since the cemetery’s founding. No founding member of the church who was there at Pentecost is alive today, but our goal remains the same. It is simply a changing of the guard.
