Imagine a hot day when you’re doing yard work, but the only thing available to drink is root beer. You keep drinking it, but as the day goes on, you feel more and more dehydrated. That’s because studies show that sugary, caffeinated drinks, like soda, can increase dehydration instead of quenching thirst. The high sugar content forces your body to pull water from its own cells to process the excess sugar, making you feel thirstier. Caffeine, a diuretic, can make things worse by causing your body to lose even more fluid. So, while soda may taste satisfying at first, it leaves you craving something more. What you really need is pure, refreshing water. How often do we chase after things of this world because we think they will satisfy, but they don’t—and so we find ourselves in an endless cycle of discontent. Jesus alone can truly satisfy the desires of the soul.
