In 2009,US Airways Flight 1549 left New York. Three minutes into the flight, the plane was surrounded by a flock of birds. The flight crew was unable to avoid them, and both engines were damaged. The pilot, Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger decided that they would be unable to reach the nearest airports, so he made the decision to land in the Hudson River. Despite the riskiness of water landings, he was able to land the plane without any casualties or major injuries to anyone in the plane. After the emergency landing, passengers could be seen standing on the plane’s wings floating down the river. Imagine you were on that plane. For a couple of minutes, you were probably thinking that you were doomed. You were headed for destruction. But then, miraculously, the pilot is able to save you! You’ve been rescued! The story of Scripture is one of divine rescue. All human beings were lost in sin and headed for destruction. but in grace, God sent his Son Jesus to enact his rescue plan. Putting on the helmet of salvation is embracing that rescue that the believer has received in Christ.
