This week, we discuss the metaphor of the church as Christ’s flock. While any one member might exist as an individual “sheep,” the sense of belonging to a flock comes from the one who shepherds the flock. It is the owner and director of the flock who gives the collective sheep their identity. We see this concept even in modern-day times. In Western films a theme that occurs commonly is the handling of livestock and how those livestock are marked with a unique brand to say whose they are. Everything else that takes place involving those cattle starts from the point of belonging. This is also the case when we discuss the church as the Christ’s flock.
