The Mirror of the Spirit

One of the Spirit’s main roles is to transform us more into the likeness of Christ. He does this by showing us the reality of our hearts—the good and the bad. Who better to know our hearts than the God who created us and sent his Spirit to dwell within us forever? In Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Albus Dumbledore reveals to Harry the meaning of the Mirror of Erised, saying, “It shows us nothing more or less than the deepest, most desperate desire of our hearts” (J. K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone [New York: Scholastic, 1999], 213). Similarly, the Spirit reveals to us the deep desires of our hearts. As the Spirit reveals the reality of our hearts, we are gently led to prayer, repentance, and communion with God.
