Some characters in pop culture believe that they are on a “mission from God,” even if they don’t have a direct revelation. Some do, however, seemingly receive that declaration. In The Blues Brothers (directed by John Landis, Universal Pictures, 1980), Jake and Elwood Blues are racking their brains trying to figure out how to save the orphanage where they grew up. They enter a Black church, and as the preacher (played by James Brown) yells to Jake, “Do you see the light?,” Jake is bathed in a white light, and realizes that they can save the orphanage if they get their band back together.
