“Dad, your family needs you” Shang-Chi tells his father Xu Wenwu after defeating him in battle in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (directed by Destin Daniel Cretton [Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, 2021]). His father was lost, destroying his family and potentially the universe in his quest to liberate his wife’s soul from apparent bondage. While Shang-Chi and his father were enemies throughout the film, in these final moments Xu Wenwu realizes he was wrong and sacrifices his life for his family. Father, beyond everything you do for your family, remember that you model a way of life that can reveal the gospel in a powerful way. And that often involves self-sacrifice.
