A Gift For All

Public gifts that are seemingly just for some can turn out to be for all. On the season premiere episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show on September 13, 2004, Oprah brought eleven audience members onto the stage to give each of them a new car (“Why Oprah’s Car Giveaway Is the Most Epic Talk Show Moment Ever,”Biography, December 11, 2018, https://www.biography.com/news/oprah-car- giveaway). She then told the audience that one of them would also receive a car, and it would be the one who had the keys in their white box that was being passed out by the staff. When the boxes were opened, every box contained keys, leading Oprah to exclaim, “You get a car! You get a car! You get a car!”Jesus “sets the table” for all the peoples of the world. He is the promised Messiah, come to bestow gifts on all people, not just the ones who are expecting him. Whether we have the faith to come to him, or we find ourselves unable to speak or hear, he comes to bring us to the banquet.
