We can usually recognize the handwriting of the people we know the best. Try to imagine the handwriting of a best friend, a parent, a spouse, or a child. We know what it looks like, because we’re familiar with it. When you love someone, you pay attention to even little things about them and can recognize things like their handwriting. In a similar way, when Daniel sees God’s writing on the wall in Daniel 5, he could interpret the writing on the wall because he knew the God who wrote it. The wise men in Belshazzar’s court probably could read the actual words, but they couldn’t interpret them. They knew the words, but they didn’t know the author.
