Empathy is often defined as being able to put yourself in someone else’s shoes. But it means much more when we actually work to take away the pain from others. We can do that for others because Jesus has done it for us. A picture of this is found in John Coffey in The Green Mile (directed by Frank Darabont, Warner Bros. Pictures, 1999). John can absorb the ailments of others, process it within his own body, and expel it in a black cloud.
