An idol is something you create, and it is something you worship. It can be a person. It can be an object. It can be intangible—like a career or a relationship status. It is hard because we live in a society obsessed with idols. We even have a show called American Idol. In that show, they spend weeks getting you to fall in love with and then be passionate about a performer with the hope that when the show is over, you’ll give your money to the company to support that individual. It’s easy to become far more obsessed with the latest hot celebrity than with God. God says do not do this. Put him first in your life. The minute you put God second is the minute you fall into the trap of crafting and worshipping an idol.
