Combatting My Fear

We don’t find many helpful responses in a Google search about how to use the Bible to combat existential fear and dread. Whether asking for advice digitally or face-to-face, we often meet clichés and trite words telling us to have more faith or to trust in God more. While these suggestions are somewhat accurate, they don’t offer the most actionable advice when feeling uncertain. If you are weary of “New year, new you!” marketing campaigns—knowing that whether it is dieting, budgeting, or Bible reading, most of us fall short in consistency—then consider our passage in Lamentations. As believers, we aren’t immune to hard times and uncertain futures. We can carry baggage from past experiences and unmet hopes and dreams that weigh us down, even as we try to start fresh. Lamentations reminds us that life is not usually all good or all bad; instead, it brings a combination of all kinds of experiences. We can find purpose, peace, and progress in it all.
