Discipline For the Sake of Redemption

God judges for the sake of redemption. His punishments are meant for our renewal and restoration. As the author of Hebrews says, the Lord disciplines those he loves (Hebrews 12:3–11). The docuseries Welcome to Wrexham (directed by Bryan Rowland, Boardwalk Pictures, 2022) follows actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney as they take ownership of Wrexham AFC, a historic professional football club in the UK. In the second episode of the first season, the newly minted owners are forced to make some tough decisions after their club fails to reach the playoffs, firing their head coach and releasing several players. This is not done for the sake of the team’s demise, however, but for their success and triumph, which begins to come to fruition as the next season unfolds. Similarly, God reprimands us not to harm us but to help us. God does not take pleasure in judgment (Ezekiel 18:32), but he is willing to administer it to create the possibility for redemption.
