In the United States, when a leader is sworn into public office, they often place a hand on the Bible as they take their oath. When they do so, they’re signaling reliance on someone higher than themselves. They’re asking God to hold them to account for their actions while in office. The author of Hebrews wrote that when God promised to make Abraham a father of many nations, God swore by himself because there was no one greater than him (Hebrews 6:13–20). Abraham trusted that God would keep his word not just because God was God but because God had shown himself to be faithful to Abraham in the past.
