Human promises made can easily be ignored when there are greater powers at play. In the Netflix series The Dragon Prince, Rayla is an elf who is bound by a promise to avenge the death of the titular dragon (season 1, episode 9, “Wonderstorm,” directed by Villads Spangsberg, aired September 14, 2018). Rayla’s promise is symbolized through a wrap around her wrist, which gets tighter the longer she does not fulfill her vow. Through the course of the series, Rayla discovers that the dragon is alive inside his egg and tries to protect him. When the egg hatches, Zym, the dragon, nuzzles up to her, notices the wrap, and casually snaps it off her, freeing her from the bondage of her promise.
