There is an African proverb of unknown origins that says, “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” The meaning is clear. If you want to last in life, you have to get help. It might be slower, but you’ll actually get somewhere. All cultures have proverbs like this to guide them. And in most cases, those proverbs would be associated with the elders. Why? Because the elders not viewed to have gotten old by accident but were revered because their long life showed they had much to teach. Taking this one step further, we see clearly that longevity requires intentionality. It takes planning and deliberate action.
