In the novel, and film of the same name, Lilies of the Field, Homer passes a traveler who ends up helping impoverished nuns build a chapel (directed by Ralph Nelson, United Artists, 1963). He does so at first simply by giving his time and skills, but when the supplies run out, he gets a job to help buy more of the supplies needed to build the chapel. His sacrificial actions and efforts attract the attention of others, who begin volunteering their time and giving to the project to help see the chapel completed. A small gift can turn into a very big gift when given to God.
