Les Misérables is one of the most popular novels turned musical turned movie (twice). One of the overarching themes is grace. Jean Valjean, the main character, has been released from a long jail sentence but has a diminished status that keeps him from finding employment. Hungry and tired, he is found by a priest who lavishes him with the best dishes and food. Late in the night, Valjean steals silver from the church, and the priest keeps him from being jailed yet again when he is caught by the police. The priest then challenges Valjean to use this opportunity for good.
We are indeed saved by grace through faith. Therefore we can be kind to others, even if it leads to us being taken advantage of, and know that our place before God is secure.
