In the fun-loving whodunit film Knives Out (directed by Rian Johnson, Lionsgate Films, 2019), an eccentric detective investigates the death of a wealthy patriarch. In the film, like the rich man in Jesus’s story, each member of the family is greedy and self-interested, more focused on getting their rightful share of the inheritance than on the tragic passing of a loved one. Much to the family’s dismay, however, it is not the selfish and entitled relatives who will eventually inherit the estate, but the patriarch’s humble and lowly caretaker—the only “member” of the family who truly loved the aging old man. Similarly, it is those who love God, rather than those who love money and themselves more, who will inherit the kingdom of heaven.
