The word different means “not identical; separate or distinct,” and the word was “first recorded in 1350–1400; Middle English, from Anglo-French, from Latin different– (stem of differēns), present participle of differre ‘to scatter, disperse’” (https://www.dictionary.com/browse/different#google_vignette). Another way of talking about being different is to describe someone or something that doesn’t quite seem to fit—a misfit. The 2012 Social Club Misfits song “Misfits” (featuring Chris Durso) describes the different and misfit life of being a Christian. In the song, we hear Durso say, “A misfit is one who’s uncomfortable with his or her surroundings and is seen to be disturbingly different than others. This is a lifestyle, and it is a commitment to God, and as misfits living under the mandate of Jesus Christ. We do not take our commitments lightly.”
