On their Black Album, Metallica included a ballad entitled “Nothing Else Matters.” In some ways, the song says the opposite of what Paul says in this passage. In verses 7–9, Paul declares that, in comparison to Christ, “nothing else matters”—including the boasts of the flesh and the accomplishments of self. On the contrary, Metallica proclaims that trusting in yourself is the only thing that matters. Use the lyrics of “Nothing Else Matters” to help illustrate the contrast between “the flesh” and “the Spirit” in this week’s passage.
