“Santa! I know him, I know him!” Buddy the elf makes this statement in the 2004 film Elf. Buddy is a human boy who was raised by Santa and the elves in the North Pole, only to travel to find his biological father in New York City. The scene is set, as Buddy is believed to just be another retail store worker dressed up for the holidays, when the manager tells the customers that Santa is visiting the next day. Everyone is surprised to see this grown man, dressed like an elf, so excited and saying that he knows Santa Claus. Unbeknownst to everyone there, however, Buddy does know Santa. This becomes apparent when the naive Buddy discovers that the retail-store Santa is not the real Santa. Buddy knew Santa Claus in a way that no one else in the story could relate to.
