Reciprocation

A teeter-totter is a traditional playground activity that is played between two people. It is based on the principle of reciprocation. In order to use the toy the way that it was designed to be used, and in order to fully maximize the toy’s potential, the two participants must reciprocate with one another—alternating actions and movements. Without reciprocation, the game is not nearly as fun, enjoyable, or worthwhile. In fact, without reciprocation, the game essentially loses its meaning and purpose. The same is true with our relationships. In the absence of reciprocation and mutual self-giving, relationships lose their value.
