In the film Les Misérables (directed by Tom Hooper [Universal Pictures, 2012]), Jean Valjean’s choice to let Javert live brings the police officer to an existential crisis. Confronted with radical forgiveness, Javert says, “Does he know that granting me my life today … this man has killed me even so?” Rather than accept forgiveness, Javert chooses to end his life: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IsZdfna1LKA. Lent is a season when we view our sinfulness in light of God’s great sacrifice. The law kills but the Spirit makes alive (see 2 Corinthians 3:6). Unlike Javert, may we in our confrontation of our sin embrace forgiveness.
