Surprise parties are fun. The surprise party has two elements of surprise. The person the party is for is surprised overall by the party, and then they keep experiencing surprise by the different people they encounter there. Heaven is going to be a surprise party. It will be surprising to see who’s there, and that surprise may keep happening repeatedly. The story of the thief on the cross and Jesus reminds us never to count anyone out but to remember that the gospel is an invitation to belonging.
