In the Disney+ series Andor, Cassian Andor undergoes a transformation from a self-centered person with a dark past to someone willing to put others first and to stand against tyranny and injustice. In Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (directed by Gareth Edwards, Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, 2016) we see the rebellion five years later, and Andor is a different man from the one introduced in Andor. “Rebellions are built on hope,” he tells Jyn Erso, the heroine of the story. She repeats this encouragement later in the movie when all seems hopeless. These characters know the rebellion will not succeed during their lifetimes, but they remain motivated by hope that evil will not always triumph over good. We don’t know when Christ will return, but our hope for his return can spur us to love and action now, even when it seems that the good we do cannot make up for all that is broken or evil in our world.
