The Light of Eärendil

In The Lord of the Rings, as the Fellowship is getting ready to continue their journey, the Elven queen Galadriel gives them gifts for the journey. To Frodo, she gives the light of Eärendil, encouraging him to use it when all the other lights have gone out (J. R. R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring [London: George Allen & Unwin, 1954], bk. 2, chap. 8). In many ways, God’s faithfulness is like the light of Eärendil. So often we forget that we have this gift of God’s presence and love, and suddenly, it seems as if all hope is gone and we don’t know what to do. But when we stop looking back and instead fix our eyes forward on Jesus, everything is illuminated in the light of his love, and we see that we have never been alone (Luke 9:62).
