On August 14, 1945—“V-J Day”—the Japanese surrendered to the Allies, bringing an end to the costly and wrenching Second World War. Consequently, there was great celebration in the United States. When people heard the good news that the war was over, they experienced relief, freedom, and immense joy. This good news changed people’s lives. Soldiers were coming back home. Families were reunited. Fear could subside. The gospel presents a similar story of good news: the war is over. We have been saved from the wages of our own sin. Satan no longer has any control over us.
