Transformative Empathy

In the May 2015 issue of Christianity Today, Richard Clark highlighted an emerging group of Christian video game-makers who were rising to prominence. Two of them, Josh Larsen and Ryan Green, created a game called That Dragon, Cancer, which recreated Green’s experience of his young son’s cancer. The player could choose to pray and comfort his son but ultimately, much of the game was just experienced, and the player often felt helpless as the story played out.

Larsen and Green not only sought to share Green’s family’s experience with cancer but to indirectly witness to the world about their faith. Evangelism is often more about whether we seek to bring someone closer to God or push them further away.
