As a child did you ever try and deflect responsibility from yourself to another by asking, “What about So-and-so?” Do your children ever do that to you, trying to put more attention on their siblings when you ask them to do something or when you scold them? Peter can be seen doing the same thing here. Even if he is sincerely concerned for his friend the Enduring Word Commentary notes, “Peter represents most all of us. We find it easy to deflect any personal challenge from Jesus by wondering and even worrying about what other disciples are doing or what Jesus may require from them.” Yet Jesus’s response to our questions will most assuredly be the same as his response to Peter, “What is that to you? You follow me!” (v. 22) (“John 21,” Enduring Word Commentary).
