In 2020, the sale of sympathy cards was at an all-time high because of the COVID-19 pandemic, even leading to shortages in stores. One man said, “Speaking words is important. But sometimes you have to write them down” (Michael Corkery and Sapna Maheshwari, “Sympathy Cards Are Selling Out,” New York Times, April, 27, 2020, https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/27/business/coronavirus-sympathy-cards.html). This is a real-life example of how we can do more than offer pithy words of intended prayers. We can put pen to paper and actually spend a few moments praying for and writing comforting words to people in our community.
