Unchecked envy will inevitably blind us to the good gifts God has already given us. It will undermine our ability to fulfill the role God has for us. The evil queen from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (directed by David Hand [RKO Radio Pictures, 1937]) provides a classic example. The beautiful queen shows her insecurity through her relationship with her stepdaughter, Snow White. Though she is already beautiful, she fears Snow White’s growing beauty will overtake her own. Instead of happily embracing her stepdaughter’s growth and success, the evil queen tries to have her murdered. By the end of the movie, the evil queen dies, disguised as an ugly sorceress, reflecting what envy did to her soul.
