In the biblical world, a belt was more than a fashion statement. As we see in this Bible dictionary description, “a belt was important to both everyday clothing and to battle armor. A belt, sash, or girdle was used as we use our pockets today, to tuck away money or small valuables. In terms of armor, the word ‘belt’ may refer to the piece of armor designed to protect the lower abdomen, or possible simply a belt to hold the separate pieces of armor together” (Katherine Harris, “Belt,” Nelson’s Foundational Bible Dictionary with the New King James Version Bible [Nashville: Thomas Nelson, 2014], 91).
