In a moving scene in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Jyn Erso asks the rebels to join her in fighting an unwinnable battle. Despite her pleas, someone disagrees by saying, “You’re asking us to invade an Imperial installation based on nothing but hope.” Jyn responds, “Rebellions are built on hope” (directed by Gareth Edwards [Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, 2016]). The recipients of Peter’s letter were, perhaps, feeling like the objector in this film, wondering how they could follow Christ when they were suffering. Yet Peter reminds them that their lives are built on a living hope: Jesus Christ. His resurrected life allows us to faithfully live in obedience to God.
