Hattie May Wiatt was a little girl who lived in Philadelphia in the late 19th She died and left her life savings of $0.57 to Grace Baptist Church so they could build a bigger building for the children’s Sunday school. When the church learned of her generous gift, they gave toward her vision and bought a property that then expanded to Temple College, which then became Temple University and led to the Temple University Hospital. The story is captured in a sermon by Russell Conwell which is kept in the University Library’s website.
Just like the widow’s two mites, we can never measure the possible effectiveness of our sincere gift for God’s purposes. It doesn’t matter how small of a difference we might think we are making; God will use our tithes and offerings and do something miraculous.
