Just as the commencement ceremony marks the beginning of a new chapter in life, so does baptism. It testifies that we have heard and understood the gospel of Christ’s work to save us and that Jesus is our Lord. At the same time, we are asking those who bear witness to help hold us to account, to disciple us, and to encourage us as we grow in our faith so that we in turn are prepared to do the same for those who come behind us.
