In the Christian tradition of Lent we are asked to give up something, but in the spring and after Easter, we can look forward a season of planting. We can aerate the soil and hide seeds under the warming earth, finding hope in the future, and celebrating what God has in store for us. Some gardeners lay a thick layer of wood chips over their gardens during the winter, providing a warm blanket of rich, decomposable material to nourish the soil and prepare it for the spring and summer plantings. With the approach of spring, we can push away the wood chips to find black gold ready to receive the seeds.
