Adoption is one of the most beautiful ideas in the world. A child who has
experienced trauma and is left without parents is adopted and treated as a full
family member with a new couple that never knew them before. While the ideal of
adoption is beautiful, it’s often a very difficult process. Everyone involved must
get accustomed to the new family that has been created. Paul’s contrast between
slavery and adoption captures how difficult that transition can be. When we are
adopted into God’s family, our entire self-conception has to change. The movie
Instant Family (directed by Sean Anders, Paramount Pictures, 2018) provides a
great illustration of how difficult and rewarding adoption can be.
