One of the worst feelings is getting caught directly in the middle of committing misconduct, especially when we think we’re alone. People have said that the way we act when we’re alone shows who we really are. Being discovered as only we know ourselves to be is a nerve-racking experience, particularly when we know ourselves to be less than others would think of us. The gravity of this parable becomes clear when we look at it in line with this thought. The bridesmaids were caught in the midst of their true nature—the way God knew them. This is why the groom said to them, “I do not know you” (v. 12), for they were not who they claimed to be.
