The Spirit strengthens us and enables our actions. Without him, we cannot do anything good. Think of a blender that needs to be plugged in before use. The blender cannot blend your banana, peanut butter, ice, and milk into a smoothie without the power coming from the outlet. As J. I. Packer puts it, “We certainly feel that we are doing it; we know we are. But at the same time, we know, by faith, we’re being enabled to do it” (J. I. Packer, interview by John Piper). We can be confident that the spiritual habits we enact are the work of the accompanying Spirit. As the Spirit works through our efforts, our faith is strengthened, and guidance is provided.
