Knowing In Part

The book of Job makes clear this matter of human limitedness. We don’t have the knowledge or the language to understand God fully. “Now I know in part,” writes the apostle Paul, “then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known” (1 Corinthians 13:12). There is lighthearted illustration of this limitation of human understanding in the Saturday Night Live skit “Air Traffic Control,” as Scottish air traffic controllers try to guide an American plane to land. They’re speaking the same language (mostly), but they can’t understand each other at all: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UGRcJQ9tMbY. In much the same way, we like to believe we understand God, when in fact his plans and purposes are wholly different.
