Jesus was that one in the crowd who waved for everyone to follow him. “On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, ‘If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, “Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water”’” (John 7:37–38). Jesus describes himself as “living water.” This is water that rehydrates and sustains. But Jesus also emphasizes that this water dwells in the believer. Living water not only flows into the believer but dwells and flows out of the heart of the believer. In John 7:39, after Jesus announces the living water, John clarifies: “Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.” This living water of Jesus flows and dwells in the life of the Spirit who has been given to every believer.
