Brian Wood made the ultimate sacrifice for his wife and unborn child when he saw a twenty-one-year-old driver about to collide with the car he was driving. Wood’s pregnant wife was in the passenger seat. In a split second, he turned the car in time to take the full brunt of the impact. Brian made a decision to sacrifice for his wife (Naimah Jabali-Nash, “Husband Sacrifices Life for Pregnant Wife in Crash, Occupants of Oncoming Car on Drugs, Say Cops” CBS News).
Lord willing, none of us will have to face such a horrendous demonstration of sacrifice. But what about other sacrifices? Listening when you don’t want to, encouraging her when she’s down, running errands when you are tired or going shopping with her? How can you lay down your life on a daily basis?
Giving ourselves up for our wives means sacrifice. We are called to reflect Jesus and how he sacrificed for us. He gave up the comfort of heaven to come to earth. He gave up all his heavenly resources to live modesty. Jesus sacrificed in order to get believers what was needed: redemption.
