In China Miéville’s The City & The City, two cities coexist at the same time and
place. The residents of each dislike the other and look down on each other.
They’ve developed a way to intentionally not see each other. They can pass
each other on the sidewalk and not see them. We are a city on a hill amid a city
of the world. In Miéville’s novel, people ignore each other, but in our world, we
need to go out of our way to pay attention to others, see them, serve them, and
love them (China Miéville, The City & The City [New York: Del Rey, 2009]).
