How many of you hate surprise parties? Maybe the thought of them gives you anxiety. Many have threatened family members that they’d better not throw surprise parties for their birthday—and definitely not allow the servers at a restaurant to sing to them at their birthday dinner. Surprises bring out our struggle with control. We want to know what’s going to happen. Surprises take away that knowledge and remind us of the unknown and our finitude.
